Hi everybody, my name is Kathy

I am a newbie to chickens...sort of. I did raise two groups of chicks from my biology hatches in high school. I also got two ducks as an Easter gift when I was seventeen. That was back in the early seventies. I raised them in my mom and dad's basement in a suburb of Minneapolis. When they were big enough they went outside on the patio and then finally they went to live on my uncles or cousins farm near where we live now.

I am also a veterinarian. I own a vet clinic but we do only small animal stuff ie dog, cats and pocket pets. I did learn about chickens in vet school but the instructor was dull and that was a long long time ago!

I have been married to Dave for 25 years. We have two grown boys. Last June we purchased my dream - an old farm that has been converted into a hobby farm. We moved in with our four dachshunds, three cats, two parrots and a tank of fish. For my birthday in July, my boys got me seven chicks. They came mail order from Ohio. One was very sickly. I believe that may have been the first time I came to BYC for advise. Per your help, I wore her in a scarf around my neck for 24 hours til she got stronger. I named her Rickety Bobbie cause she was so weak. She pulled through though.

Our chicks are in a nice chicken coop that was built in 1948. It is beautiful on the outside but needs work on the inside. My husband is a handy man and has been working steadily to improve our chicken coop as our hens grow. Last nite he was busy building the nesting boxes.!

We had our first fatality last week when one of our weiner dogs got into the fenced area in front of the coop. It was horrible because I could have prevented it. I cried! We repaired the weak site in the fence and have beefed up our viligance. I have also decided to try to find a rooster for my girls.

I am very excited to be involved with the birds. They are a source of tremendous pleasure for me and Dave. I am loving all the hints and advise this site is giving me and that is why I decided to join.

Hi and :welcome

Great to have you here! Good luck with your coop renovations. We were faced with a similar task - the coop was there but it was falling apart. :p Didn't build any nest boxes though - we found some weird metal tunnel-like things and put them in the coop, and the chickens lay inside those.

Have fun with your chickens! :D
