Greetings from Lower Alabama

Hello BYC community!

My name is Paul and I'm beginning my first flock in lower Alabama. I'm looking forward to both eggs and meat. I'm hopefully going to have a mobile coop that'll be situated mostly inside of an orchard I'm beginning.

Right now I'm trying to find the right breed and the right place to get my birds, as well as sewing a good perennial pasture grass and planting trees. Any help or comments are always MORE than welcome.

Hi and

The most common breeds are sex links for laying, cornish X for meat birds. Barred Rock, Orpington and Delaware are listed as dual-purpose, for both, and a lot of people have those. People who keep meat birds will probably have better answers for you.

I have found good-quality Delawares to be exceptional dual purpose birds. My young Euskal Oiloa (Basque chickens) also look very promising.

Thank you all for the welcome! Fierlin, I've been looking at heritage breeds of birds so far. I'd like to let the flock be self sustaining if I can bring in enough new blood every so often. I've actually had my eyes peeled for any good documents about a breeding program. As for the birds I've been looking at, I really seem to keep coming back to Minorcas, but the problem is finding good stock to start out with. I have a neighbor who keeps quite a few breeds for show, so I don't know exactly how well they might lay in our heat. He does have orpingtons though, so I might need to check into them as well.
