Hello,
I guess introductions are in order first. I didn't set out to become a flock mother. It was thrust upon me by my own live-in parent. But seeing as I do the bulk of the bird care, it seems I need to seek out the advice of other parents of feathered creatures who are much more experienced than I am.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We've had our birds since mom surprised us with a box of peepers in the spring of 2021 along with a baby pool, a heating lamp, and a giant smile on her face.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We do not currently have chickens. We are the parents of two geese and eight ducks.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We know we have two Magpies, and two Golden 300's. We believe we also have two Khaki Campbells, one White Layer, one Blue Swedish, and two Breckon Buff Geese. We have a male and female of each breed. The blue is female and the white is male.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
We love cuddling with our geese and watching the birds enjoy swimming.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love tea parties, entertaining, and baking.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I live with my husband who is Deaf and my mom. I'm the oldest of seven. We also have two dogs and a dozen koi fish. I'm a writer.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I wanted to join the community because I know absolutely nothing about keeping ducks and geese except what I've read and the local vets aren't much help. It didn't take long to realize that if I wanted answers, I'd need to find people who loved these birds.
Well, that's about it. I'm attaching a pre-molt picture of our babies as teens. This was before their tail feathers began curling.
