Just wanted to introduce myself to the forum at BYC, what a great wealth of information.
I would be lying if I pretended to act like I know exactly what I am getting into. Anyway:
I am new to chickens. So new, in fact, that I still don't have any. However on July 16th I will be getting (2) Golden Buff, (2) White Leghorn, and (3) Barred Plymouth Rock hens.
I am half way thru the construction of The Garden Coop, which I purchased plans for and began building this weekend. I would like to construct it at a faster pace but my 4 year old daughter is helping me build it and so we aren't in a hurry. I am also planning on making a few modifications to the plan so that I can put conduit and wire in for a light fixture within the hen-house and also an external nesting box.
I am 28 and my wife and I have a 4 year old daughter and another baby girl due in October. Our daughter is also very excited about the chickens coming into our lives!
I work in the construction industry with a focus on government contracting.
I started a vegetable garden this year and have had a great time learning about so many different things! One of the most exciting parts of our on acre property in the suburbs north of Pittsburgh is being able to show my daughter deer, chipmunks, rabbits (we just found a nest underneath the swing-set), and a wide variety of birds when they are in the yard. I would like to eventually invest in a telescope in the future as well!
