I am a new proud momma to some hens,as this is all new to me any advice would be greatly appreciated, also any info on the best breeds for eggs, I don't want to breed, just with our large family we want and need the egg production, we want to build up our coop with whatever you all can recommend please and thank you, so far we have from a local farmer a red star and a Columbian something lol, proof I'm a newbie, and I've ordered two Easter eggers, the kids will love colored eggs,I'm also in need of organic or natural feed and pesticides and parasite control want to keep my new members of the family healthy thank you ,

Welcome to BYC! White Leghorns are fantastic layers but can be flighty. A good family bird that lays well is a Buff Orpington. Good luck with your chickens!

Thank you so much for your time and wisdom. I will look into those for sure, I've seen a leg horn but not the other breed toy mentioned, now off to look at pictures ,thanks again,

Welcome to BYC!

Lots of great layers out there. You might want to stop by these 2 breeds pages. Lots of quick info on all the attributes of each breed...

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Good luck picking out your breeds and welcome to our flock!

Thank you for all the warm, welcomes, I will be sure to tell my other new chicken owner friends to join this wonderful group, and if there's a spelling mistake I'm,so sorry its the darn auto correct on my phone, happy clucking to all,, and the Buff Orpingtons' look wonderful and perfect for our coop I'm just having a hard time locating a breeder up here in my neck of the woods,, I've ordered a few leg horns they will be coming as babies in a few weeks, thanks again, now I all I need is natural and organic feed types and parasite and pesticides, if anyone knows of what I can add to the diet or the nesting boxes to keep critters and bugs away that would be greatly appreciated, if its certain herbs I can plant them in the gardens thanks again, the girls are already on lay mesh, but is there anything else I can add to the diet to boost their health and production, thanks again

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Here is a nice thread that has compiled links to a lot of the organic topics on BYC including things like where to get feed, natural treatments etc https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/283192/organic-topics-index You might try posting in the Canada thread to see if anyone knows where you can get Buff Orps locally https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/144/canadians-check-in-here For egg production, the Red Sex Links (like Red Stars) are hard to beat for pure numbers of eggs laid if you can find them locally.

Hello and welcome!!! I love my Leghorns, they lay very well, but they are not as friendly as the others plus they think everything is food! I have some Ameraucanas and the eggs are very pretty, they are more friendly and very pretty to look at! Good luck!!
