Hello BYC!
I am new to the site and new to the world of raising chickens! I work as an Instructional Assistant in Kindergarten. One of the teachers used an innovated grant to purchase an incubator. We hatched 19 eggs! I adopted 5 of the chicks. Their names are Uno (Uno was born first, an Australorp), Daisy, Big Red, and the Racers (Racer1 & Racer2). I am not sure what breeds we have. The Racers are called "Racer" because as chicks they were yellow with 3 dark racing stripes down their backs. Very beautiful! They do not look like that now. They are very fast like the road runner so "Racer" still fits. I will post pictures another time. I need help identifying the breeds (and sexes). The chicks were born Wed. May 2nd to Sat. May 5th, 2012.
I'm hoping to have some hens to raise for eggs. My wonderful husband and my growing boys (as well as myself) built them a large coop (8ft by 4ft by 4ft). They can free range at certain times of the day when someone is out there watching them. We have dogs and cats and random wildlife, so they can't free range without this momma hen! I've got a temporary yard set up for them during the day. Next weekend we will be working on their yard. At the minimum it will be 12ft by 10ft by 6ft tall. It will be covered, as my chickies love to fly. I do not plan to clip their wings. It's just too awesome watching them fly. 4 of them jumped and flew to the roof of their coop. Big Red couldn't make it. Think she's too fat! She missed the roof by inches. We picked her up so she could join her family!.
This chicken thing has been quite an adventure for me for the past 6 1/2 weeks! One of my favorite memories of them is at 2 and 1/2 weeks old, Racer1 escaped from my "recess" pen that I made from fencing in a dog crate. Racer1 looked up at me then flew 5.5ft to land on my head. It was awesome! I screamed, "There's a chicken on my head!" Since that day I knew that I could let them roam around the yard. They would follow me and come get in my lap. Apparently they imprinted on me! I thought it was a pair of red pj pants I had on, but no! It was just me! Awwww!
The chicks have been a blast and I've been pretty protective. I took them back to school to show the kids what they looked like at 6weeks old. They made birthday cards for them. And they were so good for the kids! The teachers and a few parents are going to follow their growth through my facebook.
Next spring we will do this again, and if all goes well, I will adopt some more!
