I've let them out early today since it's likely to rain tomorrow so that they won't get to go out.
I don't know what age to allow them in the pen unsupervised. I'm quite worried about them flying out or being taken by a hawk. I think that, in the future, I will avoid raising chicks without a fully-enclosed, secure run. The pen is good -- Premier 1 48" electric poultry net -- but I can't feel safe just letting my 6 and 8 week chick out all day when I'm not there to see if they get into any trouble.
