Hey guys,

I have 3.5 week old chicks in the brooder and it’s my first time. I want to start giving them a few little bits from the garden to get them acclimated to the native soil..can I give them adult chicken grit at this age? Can’t find chick grit anywhere.

Thanks!

if you put a scoop of your soil in a bowl in the brooder, they can pick out what they want from it. If you're on fine clay look for some sand to put with it. I don't think adult grit would hurt, but if they were free ranging with a broody, she'd be teaching them to forage in your soil.

All of the grit I've ever been able to find for adult chickens would be too big for my chicks, in my opinion. Have you checked online sources for chick grit? In the States, it's available from Amazon and farm stores online when the store are sold out.

There are usually smaller pieces in the adult size Grit.
If you have a colander with round holes, put some in there and swirl and shake over a newspaper. The smaller pieces will fall through.
That's what @aart does. GC

I am in rural Canada and can’t get anything shipped to me so no luck there. No worries, thanks for your input!
