Grit for chicks: How much is enough?

Why force chickens to hunt for what they need? Offer some grit! It's cheap. A chicken that is not feeling well may not search for grit. Mine had access to a well used gravel driveway and they still are interested in the grit I offered.

My chicks would go crazy over sand presented in a 3 inch diameter jar lid. They would jump on it and scratch and peck at it. They never seemed to get too much. It was the only treat they even liked for a long time.

I use sand in my chick's run instead of shavings or anything (otherwise they would be on mud!) they bathe and eat it as they want. I figure they know when they've had enough.

I offer them the choice. I don't put it on their food. Chickens enjoy finding almost anything. If the environment can't provide what they need they might suffer for it.
