My chicks are on the way and I have a couple of questions. I've read several different things on when and how to give baby chicks grit! Do I give it on day one or do I wait a few days? Do I mix it in the food or do I put it in a separate bowl? Also I bought an EcoGlow 20 and wondered if this was enough heat for my baby bantams or if I need an extra lamp?
Thank you

You don't really need the chicks on grit if they are eating only crumbles. If you start giving them fruits, veggies, etc.( anything other than their chick starter) then you need to feed grit. They can be given grit at a week old if you really want to give them some.

As for a heat, I would suggest using a heating pad instead of a lamp. A heating pad is more like the heat a hen would provide for her chicks and a heat lamp can be harsh.

As long as they are fed starter crumbles, they need no grit. As soon as they get other foods, give chick grit in separate bowl. Do you have a thermometer? Check temp....read articles and forums to find more details on these subjects...Good luck!

Thank you both! I have Manna Pro medicated starter crumbles and Scratch and Peck chick feed mixed together. Yes I have a thermometer! Thanks for the article! I'll read it now.
