Grit question

Is there any reason I can't just throw half a bag of grit into the coop and run, instead of fussing with separate grit holders?

No. If your run has dirt in it, you don't need to bother with grit at all.

I have sand in my run, but I still offer grit. I don't see why you couldn't broadcast it around the run for them to find on their own. There might be more waste that way, but they should still find it. At one point I was putting my grit in a small bowl sized hole in the ground, it worked,

I like the hole in the ground idea. There probably wouldn't be as much waste as them throwing it all over the coop from the dispenser mounted on the wall! The run is on dirt, but it is covered by 1/2 inch hardware cloth, so a little harder for them to scratch for it. Thanks!
