when should I start my chicks on grit?

If your chicks are on a starter feed, they shouldn't need grit yet. Everything they need is in the feed.

so about 8 weeks or so?

i always give them grit after a week or two, not a whole lot, just a sprinkle like you would salt on mashed potatoes.

I started my chicks on grit once they were eating foods (treats) other than their chick starter.
