You could briefly offer a dish over a few day period. As long as they are not eating like a food, should be safe to leave at that point.I will keep that in mind!

For young chicks (which may be prone to gorging on things) I sprinkle a pinch of chick grit every few days in their food. I provide grit immediately upon arrival, as I brood outside and the chicks will eat things like bedding and dirt and bugs.

At about the time they're ready to move to grower grit (at around 8 weeks of age), I no longer add any to food and provide it in a parrot cup instead, for them to take as needed.
