Grit

Here's my weigh in:

For young chicks (which may be prone to gorging on things) I sprinkle a pinch of chick grit every few days in their food. I provide grit immediately upon arrival, as I brood outside and the chicks will eat things like bedding and dirt and bugs.

At about the time they're ready to move to grower grit (at around 8 weeks of age), I no longer add any to food and provide it in a parrot cup instead, for them to take as needed.
