GROSS!! Dog problem!***

I know what you mean! Our dogs love to eat cat poop and young calf poop. We have over a dozen barn cats, and up to 50 baby calves at any given time. That's a lot of poop, and they can't get enough of it.

If you have a weak stomach, don't read the following paragraph...

When we have bottle calves, the dogs love to eat their poop as quickly as it can come out. It is absolutely gross to watch two dogs vigorously lick the calf's rear.

Makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it... Needless to say, we don't kiss our dogs or allow them to lick us.

I have a bunch of dogs and if they can get to it they LOVE "kitty box crunchies" as we call it. I really think we should market it...my dogs eat their breakfast and if I dont get them out of the back room immediately they run upstairs to the cat boxes and clean them out! (makes for easy scooping!)

Since I have a bunch of cats and a bunch of dogs the only solution has been to keep the boxes scooped as best as possible. For the OP--what you could do is muzzle the dog when she goes out if it really bothers you. Probably what you should be more worried about (since your cats are obviously outdoor cats) is the fact that your dog can pick up hook, whip, tape and or roundworms from eating contaminated feces and in turn can pass them to you.

Sorry for the gross thought of that, all the more reason to muzzle your dog I guess...Terri O

most cats wont touch their food if you add pinaplpe or other such things to it, cats are incredibly picky about how their food smells (making them in turn picky eaters) and pinapple smells strong enough to put most cats off. the powder has better luck with cats but not by much lol

my suggestion to you.
get a cheapish rolls of chickenwire or cheap fencing and wrap the trampoline frame with it, make sure theres no sharp edges for the kids to catch themselves on but essentially fence off under the trampoline...
if you dont mind the kitties using the area as a litterbox you could cut a small kitty sized hole in a few spots so the cats can get in and out but the dog cant.

then using a long line id put lots of serious work into your dogs recal.

Terri O - OMG that's a good idea! I may do that. (muzzle her) Because she also wanders off to find or catch dead critturs

That's gross to.

I may do more research on that, and get her extremely used to a muzzle. thanks! who knows what kind of parasites are going into her system...She's been wormed and has all of her shots and stuff, but can she still catch anything from my cats?

bagendhens - Yea. I should of known that before I even asked LOL Today we're giving one of our 14-16 year old kitties antibiotics. we mixed it in her food. she will not TOUCH it. BECAUSE she smells it.

Most dogs like cat poop. They also like goat poop (like milk duds) and other smelly things!

My advice is to do daily clean-up in the yard. You can also add a few covered cat litter boxes in a shed if you have outdoor cats. Of course you will need to sift the boxes daily. It is facsinating how a mother dog will clean up after her pups for several weeks after birth (all liquids and solids). Yup... kinda "gross".

Adding cat litter pans to the garage//shed thing isn't a bad idea either...man why couldn't I think of these things??

We have a similar problem.
We had a corgi, and recently adopted a beagle. the shelter sent us home with a bag of the food he was eating. he won't touch that. he won't touch the stuff we've been feeding our corgi, and he won't touch the stuff we are transitioning them both to. but he'll dive in and devour the cat scratch (which, btw leads to some interesting messes!) We put the litter box up on a shelf on the entertainment center (and this is one of those covered boxes btw) and I walked into the living room yesterday to find he had jumped onto the shelf and was halfway into the box munching away (i touched him and he bolted like he had been shot at!

its probably not funny, but really, it is

) so, now i've turned it to mostly facing the wall, but the cats can still get to it. we'll see if this works

I have a problem with my dog--he eats his own poop
sickbyc.gif
We've tried switching his diet a bunch of different times--it never works--the pineapple doesn't really help all that much. Can anyone help????

colowyo0809- LOL! We have an old kitty. I mean 16-17 years old. She's not going to be here much longer, so to make sure she don't freeze her toosh off we let her inside throughout the night on our sunroom. The other day she had an accident. I took the dogs out. You have to walk through our sun room/porch to get outside. Boy did my dog have a good morning that day! She went straight over and munched away....

A little more poop eating information. Read to the end for the most important information in bold.

Why do dogs eat cat poop?

Coprophagia literally means the consumption of poop. Little research has been done on why dogs eat poop, so veterinarians can only guess why they do this. Did you know that dogs aren't the only animals that eat poop? Many other animals eat poop on a regular basis including rodents, gorillas and many insects such as dung beetles and flies.

Herbivores such as rabbits and rodents eat their own poop because their diet of plants is hard to efficiently digest, so they have to make two passes at it to get as much nutrition out of their meal as possible. For these animals, eating poop is equivalent to a cow chewing its cud. However, because a cow has four stomachs, they are able to re-eat their food without having to poop it out first. Deer, moose and other four-stomached herbivores also chew their cud.

Many other animals, including dogs, eat poop because poop contains vitamins produced by the intestinal bacteria that the animal can't absorb through the intestinal wall. So, they get these vitamins by eating poop. Dogs and some other animals also eat poop is because it contains protein. Dogs are particularly fond of cat poop because cat poop is high in protein.

A female dog will eat the poop of her pups as a way to keep the den clean and to keep the scent of the poop from attracting predators. There is even a theory that some particularly dominant dogs will eat other dogs' poop in order to remove it, and therefore remove the other dogs' presence. This is because poop is one way in which dogs mark territory. And, some veterinarians believe that eating poop is just a trait passed down to dogs from their ancestors. Coyotes and wolves have been known to eat their own poop during food shortages, and have also been known to eat the poop of herbivores because it contains many of the B vitamins needed in their diets.

Why knows why dogs eat poop? They may do it simply because it tastes good to them. However, it's best not to let your dog eat poop because many parasites, including giardia, coccidia, roundworms and whipworms, can be transmitted through dog and cat poop. Additionally, clumping litter can pose a serious health threat to dogs that eat cat poop. Think of what the litter does when a cat urinates in it. Similar things can happen in a dog's stomach if it eats enough of the litter.
