Ground covering for under a tractor--currently it is just clay soil which will be a muddy mess.

We are doing our second batch of meaties this spring. We have our tractor all set up but need to come up with a ground covering. Last years batch burned up the little grass we had. Our thought was to build a 2x4 platform to slide the tractor back and forth on (about 3 times the size of the tractor) so each day the birds are on fresh ground with two days for the poo to dry out for us to scoop out. We need to know what would be the best ground covering. Would sand work, or do we need to get something else? We plan on putting landscape fabric down to help prevent the sand mixing with our horrible clay soil. Also how deep should we make the sand (or other material)?
