Ground medium ideas and safety

Hello All,
I am curious what ground medium/ substrate to use on a coop with an open floor in the midwest? The coop will be placed directly on the ground and our other one is raised and has a floor so it's all new to me. We may put it partially at an angle to prevent flood and snow water from pooling.
I also need some ideas on how to predator proof that one. Its a roost and root:

I'd use whatever you're using in the run in the coop as well, assuming you're satisfied with your current litter.

A predator apron of hardware cloth extending 18-24" around the exterior of the run will help prevent digging pests from getting in. Example: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/new-coop-project.1169916/page-2#post-18481100
