GROUND SQUIRRELS???? warning to all BYC'ers

Ground squirrels are carnivorous. I realized that when we took to shooting them because they were so out of control. I was so touched to see another squirrel come up out of the ground to be with the injured/dead one---until it started to eat it. Now that was gross. After that, I didn't mind sending them to the Netherlands anymore.

I had no idea about the sunflower trick! Thanks and I would like to know a little more about the castor bean pods...? What do they do when you put them down the hole? Mine will just go a few feet and make a new hole.

At this link from carrlr, the ground squirrels, at least around here, are the 3rd picture in the first row, called the 13 lined (or striped) ground squirrel.

We have tons of them around here. Cute, but very destructive with their digging. Haven't had any problems with them bothering our chickens over the years, they just go after the scratch grain. And are always under the bird feeders in the yard. I can't say I've ever seen them eat anything but seeds before. I've left cat food out a couple of times, and they've never touched it. Hmmmm....... Interesting. Scary, but interesting. I must pay closer attention. Thank you for posting the info.

Thats the ones we have here. They are smaller than other ground squirrels. I have never seen them even try to chase a sparrow away from the bird feeder, nevermind eat the Easter bunny ( I am sure some species are nicer than others?

I have seen a small red (tree) squirrels take off with a good-sized nestling.
When they have babies they can be carnivorous, I guess they need the protein because they are nursing and raising their young.

these here are the squirrels I'm talking about there called a California ground squirrel they range from Washington-Oregon and California and they are EXTREMELY destructive they eat my fruit, veggies, grass, plants, wires, saplings and they dig up all the seeds I plant they terrorize the chickens running through the run and coop getting their food I had seen them eat bird eggs before but didn't think they would go after young-lings of any species I usually use a 22-cal rifle that is capable of shooting shorts (little more powerful than a pellet rifle) and silent I pop 30-40 a year and it never seems to make a difference next season their all back
and it is very scarry to think that NOW there is a predator we have to worry about that is underground it seems EVERY thing wants chickens and to all YES I did get him although I didnt take a picture (don't like handling them that long) but a pellet rifle will work good on them as long as its over 800 fps just aim for vitals and they will drop every time

Yes they are very destructive in many ways I watched a squirrel carry off a large whole granny smith apple that had fallen off my tree and I know they would have NO problem with chicks Poults ducklings or goslings Lead has been flyin around here squirrels have been to LMAO
