I've had this happen before too! I read that your supposed to cut the stem before the leaves form for the first time to give the roots more time to develop. Also leave it in water until it develops leaves for the second time, then its ready to plant! I've been successful with two trees now with this method.
In the past 11 months sense I posted above mine has continued to grow slowly with nothing but tap water and the little bit of morning sun it gets through the window.
The last 3 or 4 months I've slowly added a little Pro-Mix BX and it's mostly growing in damp soil now. This summer I'll try transplanting it from the glass to a pot and see how it goes.
Hi there … can I join the discussion? I have two avocados that I also grew from pit.
Meet Arnie:
And Danny:
Arnie is now just over 4 years old and Danny is 3.5 years old. They are still in pots and desperately need to be put in bigger pots or in the ground. However, we are currently renting but as we are moving in the next few months to our own home, first priority will be to plant them in the ground.
Today, Arnie on the right and Danny on the left. It is extremely hot today plus they are shedding leaves and sprouting new ones so they are not looking at their best. They get the morning sun and are shaded in the afternoon. Currently: 88F and predicted to be 102F tomorrow
I left the pit exposed on both of them when they were potted and for many, many months thereafter.
While it is recommended to cut the sprout, I didn’t.
Hopefully when we have moved and the guys are in the ground they will flourish.
