Growing fodder for chickens

Does anyone know if it's normal for wheat seed sprouts to have hairy stuff on the roots? I'm not sure if its just part of the roots or mold. It looks fine otherwise.

Yep the roots can get kinda hairy looking but still white, not black.

Yeah my clover is sprouting!!!!!! boy those seeds are small to deal with. DH is going to talk to some farmers we know to get some other grains!!!!! :D

When I water my seeds, should they be dry, moist, or wet before I water them? As in terms of how often should I water them. Because when I was using the screen, the seeds were mostly dry, now, they are wet if I water them 3x.

Does anyone know if its okay to feed fodder to your chickens if it has a little mold on it here and there?

Peeps - I would take the fodder that had molt on it, toss it, and give them the rest. : )

I have poured bleach directly on the fodder with mold, let it sit for 30 minutes or so, rinse really really well, and feed it out.
I forgot to mention... if there is not a lot of mold, I'll use the bleach soak. If mold has gotten throughout the entire pad of growing fodder, I cut the grass into the feed buckets and mix it in with the fermented grains. I trim it like 1/2 inch at a time until I get down to the molding seeds, then I toss the rest. Makes me mad when that happens but I salvage what I can.

Just thought I would show y'all my dinner time feed bucket. Like I said, I try to make the evening feed very interesting as I want them to fill up before going to bed!

This one has shredded carrots, sprouts, fermented grains, beet pulp and chunks of fried liver.

This next one has a lot of fodder clipped into it. It's much easier to stir in when its clipped short (1/2" or so). It also has milo sprouts which I've kept long enough to start greening up and dry cat food... among lots of other things.

So, what do you think? If you were a chicken, would these look good to you?

On the liver, do you thoroughly cook it and then cut into chunks? Has anyone "ground" liver for their chickens?

Yes, looks good to me.........and I bet the chickens love it too!

I give them beef liver! We had a cow butchered and I won't eat liver so I purée the livers and make a nice veggie... Liver.. Rice stew in those extra cold nights!!
