Growing fodder for chickens

That is wonderful!! I'll have to look into doing that myself. Off to find a grain elevator nearby...... :D
Good luck! I hope they are as nice as mine is.

The stuff I grow out I am just doing in the seedling starter tray things. I don't know how long those will last though, they are pretty brittle. So I'll probably look into getting plastic totes of a similar size or something when I can. Some of it I just take to the sprout stage in ice cream buckets and feed it to them like that.

Those long flat storage bins you can get many places to put rolls of wrapping paper (for gifts) that often get stuck under beds are perfect for that.

Gave my girls some sprouted BOSS today. They didn't love it, but they did pick through it. I think by tomorrow they will enjoy it a little more.
I was definitely surprised by how much fodder was yielded from a little bit of seed. I'm interested to try other grains but I have not had luck finding anything. I guess I will resort to looking for the wheat bucket at walmart.

I have been reading and following this thread with great interest, but haven't posted anything here yet. Today I got such a nice surprise that I just HAD to share it. I've been trying to source some wheat to sprout for my chickens and ducks. So today I went up to our local elevator and asked if I could get a 5 gallon bucket filled with wheat (it's what I have available with a lid). They said that it would be almost impossible for them to fill something that small, but that they have LOTS of spillage and that I was more than welcome to bring as many buckets as I want whenever I want and scoop up any spillage I can find for free.

With the really high cost of all the other wheat I've looked into this is a huge deal for me.

Gotta love free!!!!

Would sprouting veggie seeds with oats work?
Yes veggeie seeds will work. But, you might have to experiment with them to find the best length of growing time for different ones, since many seeds have different germination times.

If so, is there any veggie not to sprout because they are dangerous?
Ummm, I would say any plant that is bad for them the sprout would be too. I know tomato plants are poisonous. They can only eat the fruits. Whenever I am curious if a certain kind of plant would be ok, I just do a google search to see what I can find on it. Wish I could give you more detailed info, but I am still very much learning as well.

Good luck in your sprouting!

In a world without google I would be SO clueless. I don't even know how many times a day I will be talking or thinking about something and then think "I wonder...". So of course then I have to look it up, because I'm one of those gotta know people.
