Growing fodder for chickens

Millet is the little round white seeds in bird seed. Be sure you know what you're seeing before assuming that your sprouts have white mold. the hair roots on a sprout can look like mold. Try a magnifying glass to help you differentiate.

Ok its rooting and I just got some black sunflower seed could I do straight sunflower? Does it have a sufficient nutrient in it how many dry lbs of seed for 30 plus chickens?

I would not try to sprout any thing that has cracked corn. Also, some wild bird seed mixes have little bits of shelled sunflower seeds in them. IMO, any cracked corn, or added bits that aren't whole seeds would encourage mold.

I have been doing this for a few months now and my chickens love it. I mostly use 3/4 wheat and 1/4 black sunflower seeds. While my chickens love it, I wanted to get away from commercial feed. This did not work I noticed my chickens loosing weight very slowly and they were not eating all of it so I know they were getting enough. I was thinking they were not getting enough protein in their diet. I have started growing duckweed and meal worms to supplement. They get plenty of calcium and grit. Anyone have any ideas what else they need in their diet? I was getting eggs no problem so I don't know what else to give them to keep the weight on. They are back on commercial feed until I figure it out. Please anyone with suggestions HELP!!
