Growing fodder for chickens

You eat the dandelions in your yard?

I haven't but read that you can, especially if you catch a young one. You apparently put a bucket upside down over it so it is blanched and then you toss them in your salad. A delicacy? Never tried it. They aren't for me... they're to sprout for my birds.

Hopefully I'll get lots of seeds as I want to plant a patch of dandelions so I can save my own seed.

Dandelions are GREAT to keep around. You can make a coffee like drink out of the roots, eat the greens, and make a tea out of the flowers. Though be careful to not let the flower to ferment or else you just might get drunk.

I love having them in the yard and the animals have always loved them as treats as well. By far the most helpful weed in the yard.

Cant get barley readily down here since evidently is doesn't grow so well, But I did get 100lbs of seed wheat ordered :). Was going to order some clover seed as well but crap its 75 bucks for 50lbs. Wont mess with that now but I will be getting some in the spring to seed out food plots for the birds.

I was talking more about the amount of land that could be planted with 50 lbs of clover. I'm sure it wouldn't make much in the way of fodder due to the seeds being so small.

Oh, I know i was referring to how much could be planted with that much. It would be like a cartoon all mowed down to the dirt, with trails of assorted poop as they go. Its kinda stupid they don't sell anything less then 50lbs of it tho

You might check your local farmer's coop. Ours sells it bulk by the pound. They carry a wide variety of bulk seed that can be purchased that way.

I understand about the animals eating it like crazy. Unfortunately, the army worms got all I planted this fall. It and the winter wheat was just about 2" high when the swarm invaded. Lost it all.

My dad does. I don't like the taste a little bitter for me. I am 53 but I still pick them for him just like when I was a kid.
I was just making reference to what and how things taken for granted one place (considered a weed) is a delicacy some place it can not be gotten.
