Growing fodder for chickens

Why get one breed of chicken when you can have them ALL......

well maybe not all.... but more than you should.

JenEric, hey - you are rly paying that little for wheat??

You are in Maine? Are the grains locally grown?

May I ask if it's food grade or feed grade? Even if feed, man, that's LOW!

If food grade, wow. Now, that said , wheat is usually what, $5 a bushel - unless a drought year - and a bushel is ... 50 or 60 lbs IIRC? That's what the farmer is paid, if I understand commodity market pricing (& I may well not). Talk about a MARK UP!

I can only find hard red wheat at a store called Sprouts - 99 cents a lb. But I'm in a big city w/ no true, rural feed stores, mills or true coops anywhere close (that I can find).

I got pans everywhere.  I still don't have any that I have fed out but things are looking better.  I got lots of green stuff now.  I keep soaking and putting more into pans every day  because if I ever get to the point where I can start feeding I don't want to start over from day one.

I have found it is just taking longer to grow than the 8 days and it likely is due to temps, however I have a small pan in the house and it seems to be doing the worse.  I think I am just impatient after all it is just day 9 today.  I think I should be able to feed in a couple of days and certainly by the  weekend.

I would have pans all over but Id be shot! Lol i have 7 trays going all on day 9!!! Lol ill have to wait to start more when my wheat shows up;)

I checked prices when I bought feed yesterday (at Paris Farmer's Union, just a couple miles from me). Seemed reasonable from what I've been reading here.

50# bag of Wheat for $14.86
50# bag of Oat for $13.02
50# bag of Organic Barley (the only kind they can get) for $23.25

I wound up in a 30 minute discussion with the cashier, she wanted to know what I wanted the wheat/barley/oats for. I told her I wanted it for fodder and she started laughing, she just started doing this a few weeks ago. She was awesome! She said she's having great luck with the oats, so I may start with that since it's the cheapest.
I am having a very hard time getting the oats to sprout. I have it all mixed together, but as far as I can see, its just sitting there. I wont be buying another bag (I've been thru 2 50 pounders) and it seems to just be "filler". Please let me know how it goes for you.... and good luck!

PlotSpike Forage Oats
PlotSpike Forage Oats make a fantastic early season, annual plot. These oats
were bred specifically for forage and yield a tremendous amount of high quality
forage in the Fall of the year.

None of our mixes will grow in total shade, however, we recommend you try
our Shade Blend mix if you think there might be enough sunlight getting to the plot.

Shade Blend is easy to establish and should work if the plot gets as little
as 4 hours of sunlight per day.

Ask the developer of the seed. I have found these scientists and researcher wonderfully
forthcoming with information when I ask about their area of interest.

I am on day 10 with my first batch which has oats, corn, & Boss. The oats didn't start sprouting until 3 days ago but now it is about an inch tall. It started as little tiny sprouts almost like thread so a little hard to see. It is nice and green and taller than anything else.

My second batch started 3 days ago has mostly wheat and the wheat is already sprouting into a little spider web looking base. Wheat most certainly in my case sprouted much sooner than the oats. I will report more as it grows. I keep meaning to take my camera down to the barn to get pictures but have not done that yet.
