Growing fodder for chickens

Th
I found an idea on the web for growing grass inside the chicken run without letting the chickens eat it all or scratch it up. I thought it was so cool I added it to my Pinterest wall. I think I could devote a corner of the run to this (during the spring and early summer at least) and really green up the run and give my chicks some healthy greens to munch on. http://pinterest.com/pin/422986589972249428/
that is awesome! I am so doing this in both of my coops this week! Thanks for sharing

Could I grow wheat instead of grass like this??

since wheat really is a grass, it would be ideal for this. wheat, barley, rye, oats, all would be great for this. You could also plant any kind of hardy beneficial herb in this manner, although they might need a higher "enclosure" to have enough leaves that they could continue to thrive. (thinking parsley, borage, oregano, catmint maybe?)

thank you for the link Lacy Blues. I am getting excited we are placing our order tomorrow for our 12 speckled sussex chicks (suppose to be all female, but we will see) and 25 of the fry pan mix of males. I am a little scared also, ooops wrong thread but hey I am excited!
We love SS too-- friendly girls that like to free range. I have lots of eggs in the incubator so more chicks coming!! THey collect most of their fodder directly from the woods/ open areas.

I've been chopping grass for the penned birds.

My girls don't touch ANY of my herbs. They are all well within chicken height in little raised beds, but they just leave them alone. I have Chamomile, horsemint, rosemary (I saw a couple nibbling this the other day, but am pretty sure they were eating the bugs on it, not the leaves), parsley, nasturtiums, marigolds, peppermint, spearmint, lemonbalm, cilantro/cumin and the chicks don't eat them. Though they will demolish my green tomatoes and they were seriously eyeing my baby bell pepper, so I covered that up quick!

day 3 with my BOSS and have all sorts of little sprouts and leaves!
