Growth on my dog's leg?? ??

Okay so a while ago I noticed this dime sized bump on my dog's leg, it was gray and hard. Thinking maybe something bit him I put salves and things on it, but nothing helped. So I thought, alright well we'll see what happens. Well when summer came the bump grew to about a quarter size and got really red in the middle. Then fall and winter came and it returned to dime size and gray, now it's summer again and it's starting to swell, usually he doesn't seem bothered by it, but this time, he has begun to be a bit stiff legged on that side and whines when he jumps and gets up and only wants to eat grass. Won't play with me or anything, just wants to come out and eat grass. He is five years old, soon to be six and is an outside dog. I have been trying to figure out what is up with him, but have not taken him to the vet, if anyone has any guesses as to what it may be I would love to hear! Thank you.

It concerns me that it changes in size. There are a whole host of things it could be, but I highly recommend taking him in for a biopsy. Hopefully it turns out to be a fatty tumor which is generally harmless if it doesn't affect movement. However, they usually do not change size.
