Grr, okay, what breeds should I get?

Why not purchase blue Orpingtons? Ya know, convince your dad that the breed does come in different colors than buff. It's funny that he and many are stuck on the Orps, though good layers, are not excellent layers. And with the blue color you get black and splash too so not all the same chicken running everywhere.

As for buff columbian pattern look into buff sussex. A few here on BYC breed them and now and then you'll see eggs on ebay.

I am actually talking to someone on BYC who might have some blue orps... but I will still have to see.

Whatever it is I can't go paying show-chicken prices for it as I don't yet have a job of my own, lol-- my dad will have to foot the bill.

There's going to be a chicken show on the 19th, maybe I'll be able to find some chicks there!

I have Two Selections , why not get both lol = they are : "Silver Dorkings" and "New Hampshire Reds" ......... you will love them ,
Best to you and Your birds ,

Just got my Wellies but they've been laying well since January. Leghorns are mediterranean birds and both my leghorn and my sicilian buttercup stopped laying when it got so cold (for them, it was about 32F) here in the Bay Area earlier this year. My BO just kept going. (We call her Buffy the EggLayer.)

So yeah - good luck finding something. It might be easier, like someone said, to convince your dad to let you get another color of orpington, and they're good winter-hardy birds.

After reading this thread, one could come to the opinion that any chicken is a great chicken.

I started out with RIRs and New Hampshire reds. Very, very nice birds who became more pets than anything else, but also laid big beautiful eggs. Then we added a mutt rooster and got some EE hens out of him who are pretty. Now I'd like to get a couple barred rocks because they'd make a beautiful color variety to our flock, plus I hear they're good layers.

Kinda like painting a landscape, choosing the colors of your birds. Ha.

Rode island reds beat BO By a long shot!! And leg horns hold the world record for the most eggs laid in a year!! Polish lay and egg a day all year long! Amaricaunas lay a green egg almost every day but not quite. Plus with a light on a timer all of your birds will lay thru the winter! Thats waht i would get a mixed flock but orphingtons are still nice brids you know. I can get you some polish or rode island reds for a good price (visit my blog)

Lol, lots of great posts on this thread! I don't think I would try polish again though, I got 4 of them straight run a few years ago, and 4 out of 5 turned out to be roosters and of course they killed the remaining hen *sigh*. The others went to Freezer/Dog Food heaven...

I just found out today (by playing with chicken genetics calculator) that if I got some Delaware hens, and bred them with my BO roo, the offspring would be sexlinked!!!
