Grr...Salvation Army/Donation Rant

The goodwill here is ungodly expensive, for being a thrift store. Other thrifts are selling pants at $2 per pair, GW is selling them at $12+. A lot of it is just under retail. I would never donate to them, they don't have a food bank like the local thrift shops do, and their prices are OUTRAGEOUS. Granted, there are a lot of "bag lady" type clothes at the other thrift stores.

We have a wonderful local store called BAUCM sponsored by local churches that helps local residents in need and gladly accepts donations...They offer job counseling, and lots of help for individuals and families in need. Super group of volunteers and very few staff.

At our county ran "dump" they have set up a table for items for donation and I've been blessed with a rabbit hutch that I really needed and a few rolls of not completely used upchicken wire and a work coat.....And best of all rubber boots ..........I make it a point to bring a lot there. Our county is not a rich one and it's nice that someone is recycling and not filling the landfill. I always tease the staff there and make sure I don't have to have a receipt to make a return.....

Please don't judge all the SA's or Goodwills by the actions of a few.... Our local ones are very careful with what they receive... We freecycle and C'list as well .....it's a great way to share and pay it forward.

I'd prefer to give to a Goodwill. But, I can't find a single one in Washington County. I love shopping there and I haven't ever been told something wasn't good enough to go there.

I'll try posting on freecycle or something like that to see if anyone wants it.

when the salvation army did not have to answer to united way they were much different . habitat has gotten polictical since a shakeup there a coupla years ago they are more about taking pictures and fund raising not so much about helping folks

I was humiliated when I dropped off to our local Angel View. They raise money for disabled kids. The staff started going through my stuff saying this was trash and that was trash and so on. I scooped it all up again - including the couple of items they deemed 'good enough' to sell - and drove a few feet to the Southwest Thrift store who took everything I had courteously. I told them of my treatment next door and they said more than a few people had become regular donors to Southwest because of it. Their loading dock is slightly harder to access but their attitude more than makes up for it.

Please do not just throw things away.

Try Freecycle.

Look for a church or group doing a rummage sale.

How about next to the drive with a 'free' sign?

List it on Craig'sList as free.
