I totally agree. Doing nothing knowing the situation isn't helping. Your hands ARE NOT tied(I'm not yelling just stressing

) - call the stinkin humane society - report him annonymously. If he suspects you - WHO CARES! At this point I wouldn't even consider him family, that's just me...

As for taking the dog or calling the humane society...

Bottom line is that it's his dog, and dogs are property in the eyes of the law. If he decided to do something about us kidnapping the dog -- which he would, just to be a prick -- we'd be the ones to get in trouble. He'd make no bones about sending cops to our door, trust me. Consider that he's already mad that nobody's willing to put their lives on hold to come sit (and only sit) and watch his dog suffer so he can catch a few ZZZs....that's just how he is.

If we call the humane society to report a dog being abused or neglected...well, the humane society doesn't have any law-enforcement power. They'd have to get cops involved, at which point he's just going to produce recent vet records and point out that the dog's laying there with an IV line still in it's front leg.. Case closed.

Trust me...I've thought about all this. The bitter reality is that its his dog, upon which he has the legal right to impose the results of his bad decision making. If he wants to let the dog die a horrible death because his ex-wife wanted to create drama and/or an opportunity to wedge her way back into his cone of stupidity, that's his decision to make. Unless he actually asks us to help in trying to get the dog better, we're pretty well hogtied.

That's where it's at right now.. I thought yesterday, when I started the thread, that we were being asked to help. I was wrong. He was just trying to use us for a while so he could take a break from watching his dog be miserable.

My guess is that whenever she starts making a mess on account of not being able to get up and go outside, she'll get too bothersome and he'll go "do the right thing" and have her put down at the vet's office. As such, the less we do to make this easier on him, the less time the dog will have to suffer and the quicker this will be resolved..

If the humane society did show up on his front porch concerning the dog, would he think anything of it? Call and talk to them see what they say. It's just a phone call... I know the animals are "property" to the law, but if he can't produce the records on the spot maybe they would take her until he could produce them, thus she would be in better hands and he might enjoy not having her around enough to just say forget it and let her be. Have your wife "sit" with the dog one night, and accidentally move the vet records to another spot in the house so he doesn't readily find them for the humane society. If he's that blaze' about everything, I can't imagine he never misplaces any paperwork. Sure he can call the vet, but that'd still give the dog some time away from him. Or, is he a good bs-er? If he is then that could be a problem, but

Deciding when to continue "treatment" (or suffering) and when to let an animal go is a judgement call, and when it's your dog, it's your call. That's just the way it is. He's had her at the vet and can prove that easily enough with a piece of paper or a phone call or whatever...that's enough to stave off an animal cruelty charge in and of itself.

Basically, until OAWS (owning an animal while stupid) becomes a punishable offense, there's really nothing we can do but cringe as he continues to make bad decisions.

Trust me when I tell you that it doesn't bother you guys NEARLY so much as it bothers me, and I can see pretty plainly how much it bothers you guys. So, imagine where I'm at..

I mean, I know this idiot and this dog, personally. She's a sweet dog...we kept her for a few days after Idiot and Mrs. Idiot got married. If we thought taking the dog or calling the humane society would be of any use, rest assured that we'd have already done it.

He apparently tried to call our house at like 3pm today, even after my wife TOLD HIM REPEATEDLY that we had a vet's appointment for one of our own dogs at 3pm.

Doesn't care. Doesn't listen. Me, me, me, me, me -- that's what he cares about.

My wife and I agreed that he doesn't need to have this made any easier for him, because the easier it is to prolong her misery, the longer he'll do it. If it becomes a pain in his rear end, he'll put her down. If she really does have liver damage from...starvation, I guess?..I dunno...then that's probably best. At this point, that is, regardless of how many layers of the onion of stupidity had to get peeled back to get the dog this far in the hole..

Best would have been for him to forgo his stupid softball game the day he tried to sprinkle wormer over her food like a moron only to sit and watch her NOT eat it, just like she was NOT eating anything else.. That was the day we offered to come hit her with fenbendizole and leave him with enough -- premeasured in syringes, no charge -- to treat her in two rounds of three straight days, about 10 days apart.

I've little doubt that she'd be fully recovered by now if he'd done that...but no...had a softball game. The cougar was supposed to be there, sooooo...sorry, pooch...you come LAST in my life.

(...our GSD has a yeast infection in her ears, btw...food allergies, I'm sure. Off we go to find a better [$$$

] food which can also be ground and made into a gruel, for she also has megaesophagus. She's a little over 3 now when the life expectancy of ME dogs is usually 2 or less. Most are euth'd, but the vet knew how we roll and said "Give her a chance.. See what happens. You'll know soon if it's not going to work." Well, it worked.

I swear, I think your BIL's dog has heartworm. This is no regular worm. Liver damage? That is all heartworm. I would call animal control- I don't care what records he has, if he is not caring for the dog let animal control take it from him. PM me the fools name and number and I will call them, you can't get blamed that way.

What an idiot BIL. Sounds like someone I would have nothing to do with even if it was my own brother. I just don't have time for those kind of people.

What about making your dog's food? Then there are no preservatives or anything.

Put some worms in HIS food.

((Not a serious suggestion of course))
