If the dog has heartworm depending on the severity of infestation the poor thing could be given ivermectin. I'll have to look through my books but I also think there is a 'natural' treatment too. If it is heartworm, all is not lost. I had a rescue dog that probably had the worst kind worm infestation possible. She did go to the vet for treatment and after receiving two treatments was free of heartworm. Yes there was some permanent damage but nothing that truly affected her quality of life. Needless to say she ended up becoming a permanent fixture here until she died 2 years ago from cancer.
I agree with the previous posts that a call to the humane society/pound. Most pounds do have animal control officers who go out and investigate claims of abuse/neglect. I sure hope this story has a happy ending.

If the poor thing has heartworms and is in such terrible condition the treatment will kill her. Real heartworm treatment is very very hard on a dog and even healthy dogs will die from it occasionally. Put the poor thing down.

Ok, so...BIL calls my wife yesterday and said he'd taken the dog to The Cougar's vet.. We can tell him all day long that he needs to see another vet, but when his hoochie tells him, he's all over it...of course.

Anyway..

This vet says the dog does NOT have worms. Probably did, but doesn't anymore. Or maybe that was never the actual problem, and the other vet was just an idiot...we honestly don't know. BIL might, but I don't...put it that way.

In any case, now the dog basically just has liver damage, a skin infection, and is extremely malnourished and weak.. This vet apparently says that she's just going to need supportive care until the liver can heal.

Yes...heal. I really dunno -- don't ask me.

Anyway, BIL actually took the day off yesterday and skipped doing something that would have been really fun he'd had planned for months, so that was a step in the right direction.. After getting rehydrated a bit at the other idiot vet's office, she was able to stand and walk enough to go out to pee and so forth -- but was still EXTREMELY weak.

My wife actually went over there for a few hours.. She said the dog looks terrible -- like, truly horrible -- and smells like she actually died a few days ago. I dunno what that's about, but it could be the skin thing.

BIL took the dog to the better vet this morning to drop her off for the day so they could get her back on IVs and so forth.

At this point...even though it never should have gotten to this point...I'm actually going to cut him a teeny bit of slack for at least making an effort to rectify his idiocy at what I'm sure is going to wind up being a HUGE financial burden. The cutting slack thing is what convinced my wife to go sit for a while and help him out yesterday..

I'll be sure to keep you guys posted on the dog's progress. She's by no means out of the woods, but I'm hoping she's at least hit bottom and can maybe start climbing soon. We'll see.

Oh, of course.. Because I totally had something to do with letting this dog get in the shape it's in, what with my having offered to come help free of charge several months ago and whatnot..

How dare I.

Ok, so there's two votes for me being part of the problem now..

...unbelievable...

May I remind several of you that I can't put the dog down, for the dog does not belong to me?!?!!

Yes, I'm cutting the moron some slack right now because the dog spent all day today in the care of a qualified veterinarian on the moron's dime. Maybe I'm being silly, but if that vet hasn't recommended putting the dog down just yet -- WHICH SHE HASN'T -- then perhaps the dog's got a shot.

I'll keep you guys posted, but in the meantime, I'm going to go NOT put a dog down that isn't mine.

Easy easy cmjustO. I don't believe anybody is saying you are to blame. I'm certainly not. I understand the dog does not belong to you.

People are just giving their opinions. Hope this all turns out OK whatever happens.

About 10 years ago we had a dog go into full liver failure from a reaction to Rimadyl.
She looked very bad and skinny and almost did die, but we very carefully nursed her back to health.

Hopefully your BIL is capable of giving her the care she needs. It really is a sad situation.

Everyone needs to relax. This thread is ONLY a rant. The OP can't/won't do anything and everyone offering advice can't do anything. The thread is basically pointless, so everyone just chill out. People are getting testy, because everyone here is feeling helpless.
