Grubbly Farms vs. Scratch and Peck

I feel like it's a constant juggle of protein for chickens. One could always give your chickens too much protein and then there is a problem on that side as well! I feed them grubbly farms mostly but I also give them protein treats. Just a note on oyster shell, My girls will only eat the Oyster shavings. I have found my egg shells got much better after I switched to Scratch and Peck Oyster shavings. Cheers!
Yeah, mine aren’t keen on oyster shells much. They prefer their sun-dried egg shells. However, fortunately, I might have the problem of too much calcium as there are often calcium deposits (“egg pimples” as my friend’s young son calls them) on some of my egg shells. I’ve refrained from giving them any of that and it’s helped to reduce sight of the bumps. Their shells are still hard.

Do you ever provide grit?

Grit should always be provided no matter what you feed. They can sometimes find their own if allowed to free range but not always. In any case, it never hurts to provide grit regardless, worst case scenario if you provide it and they don't need it is they'll ignore it, worst case scenario if they need grit and they don't have it is they get crop issues and get ill or die

My local feed store’s mix. They make it there on site.

I found a fly head in S&P layer feed (photo attached) earlier today. It freaked me out. I emailed them about it because full grown flies aren't in their ingredient list! They replied that it's a flax meal pellet. Does it look like pellet to anyone? Why is there a set of eyes in a pellet?? Based on their reply, it wasn't intentionally included. I hope it's free of any parasites. Is it just me or is this creepy?

I'm sorry, but this made me laugh! It does kind of look like a bug, but I'm inclined to believe Scratch & Peck that it's just a piece that wasn't broken down. Either way, it will be a very special nugget for the chickens to find! I wouldn't worry about it.

Doesn't look like a fly to me either but either way I wouldn't worry, chickens eat random bugs they find all the time - including flies. If anything the bit of added protein would be good for them

Yeah, searched bug head images. I think it's grasshopper. I have it upside down. I don't think grasshopper carry any bacteria or viruses so I think I'm ok!
To me it just looks like a malformed pellet (I spent many a day catching grasshoppers as a kid and I can say that doesn't look like anything from any grasshopper i've seen). Pretty much anything can have bacteria or viruses (and grasshoppers can carry tapeworm). In any case I don't think it's anything to worry about bug or not. They very likely eat a lot of bugs just hanging around outside when you're not looking. A single random fly or grasshopper that gets into a bag of chicken feed is of little concern
