Good afternoon. New here. I'll be getting my coop and chickens this Saturday(3/22/14). I'm going to start with a chicken tractor and 3 Golden Comets, to see how it goes. I'll thank you all in advance for your help and guidance.. I'm really looking forward to harvesting my first real egg..

Oh, that first egg is so EGG-citing!! And it will seem like ages before they start laying! But just be patient and it will happen. I still enjoy finding those treasures in the nest boxes. Never gets old.

Definitely follow the link that Kelsie has provided to the learning center. Lots of good reads on all the aspects of keeping poultry.

Chicken tractor and hens arrived today. 2 of the 3 hens had laid eggs while in transit. I actually got to watch 3rd hen lay hers about 10 minutes after arriving in my back yard. I hope this is an omen of good things to come...

Wow....congrats on those gorgeous eggs!! How EGG-citing!! Nice tractor too. It might take the hens time to get used to their new digs. Sometimes they can stop laying for a week or two until they get settled. The eggs they layed today were already in the pipes! Just move slowly around them and keep them quiet and they should be good to go soon! Good luck in your new adventures!
 
It's only been 5 days, but I am impressed with these hens(Golden Comets).. The 3 hens are batting 1,000 and have laid 3 eggs per day since their arrival! I hope I'm not jinxing them by posting this(knock on wood..), but I am really egg-cited(Sorry, couldn't help myself)!!!! I should hopefully be able to let them free range the yard in a few days. They have taken to the coop very well and didn't need any prodding getting into the coop the first night(Gentleman I bought tractor and hens from said sometimes they might need a little prodding, because they start out in a big flock situation and they sleep in a small barn). My dogs seem to be blasé about the hens and I'm hoping it stays that way. All in all a great first week.
