Being new to chicks and having just received them yesterday, I am not familiar with much of their behaviors yet. I've noticed when they all fall asleep (all 6 of them) one seems a little more alert or standing over the others...it is not always the same chick either. With my horses, when one naps, another one will "stand guard"...do chicks do this when "mom" is not raising them??? Sometimes when they are all sleeping and I approach (I always start talking before I get to them, so as not to startle) one will always be more alert than the others (who hardly open so much as an eye, let alone actually get up)

Has anyone else noticed this or perhaps it is just the least tired one?

Just curious!

It has happened every time...one always perks up and checks things out as the others snooze!

If that is what they are doing..how cool is that!?
Little guard chicks!

Hmmm...I'll try to keep track if it is the same ones, it seems like it is always different...but maybe it's really one or two and they are alpha types?

I only have two, but they almost never sleep at the same time. One keeps watch while the other one sleeps.
