My wife, Carrie and I moved back to South Dakota to assist my parents. I am 41, and my darling wife is 31. I have 4 children from my first marriage 3 of which are grown, and I inherited a wonderful daughter with my second marriage. My parents are getting on in years, mother is in poor health and my father is almost completely blind. They would not do well living anywhere but home, besides the nearest hospital is an hour drive(in good weather). We currently reside on about 1000 acres. The ranch is in sore need of attention, having been mostly neglected for about 15 years, so a job in town was extremely difficult to keep and do all the work needed here. We are slowly trying to become an "old McDonald" type farm. We acquired 25 Ameracauna chickens (though I think they are more like easter eggers), then bought 18 guinea fowl (straight run). With the purchase of the guinea's 3 turkens were thrown in for free. We started a colony of rabbits, 20 does and 2 bucks, california and california/NZ cross. Took in a couple goats for my cousin, in exchange for some kid goats next spring. Hoping to acquire a jersey milk cow, some Cayuga ducks and maybe just maybe a couple hogs next spring,(not convinced I want to deal with hogs). Maybe its just the fact that my (city) wife gets such a thrill out of any thing (baby) that comes along, but I am definitely looking forward to keeping a smile on her face, so I'm guessing we will have lots of baby anything we can. She still squeals with joy when she finds an egg. I think that about sums us up, looking forward to the rewards this forum could provide, and maybe be able to contribute back.
