After the talk about dog books I counted all of mine up from when I was younger (like age 7) until now.. Anything from training, behavior, puppy names, encyclopedias and facts to breeding. 23 total. I should open up my own library. They just collect dust anymore.

Over the last 13 years of my Mastiff research and STILL not actually ever having one

I have found that after WWII various breeds HAD to be crossed into the few Mastiff lines out there because the breed was close to extinction and the gene pool was so bad that the only way to restore the breed was to use a few similar breeds. I heard they used Great Danes, St's, and Akita's for out crosses....I am sure there were probably more.. The problem is, when you talk about Deer Run breeders, no one really wants to hear it because 99.9% of the Mastiffs World wide go back to his kennel

Alot of the time breeders of Deer run free bloodlines use it just as a selling ploy...That's why they call their dogs clean....Guess they don't want to mention a Bullmastiff that was bred into the Breed in England back in the 1980's either. There's St's in their lines as well as Great Dane, an it didn't come from Deer Run,

You're absolutely right about other breeds being used to recreate the Mastiff. I think Dogue de Bordeux were used too.
Yes, "clean" and "Deer Run free" mean more to some people. Most people don't care.
I think, though, it's more because Tobin didn't care about keeping proper records then anything. Wycliff is a prime example; he was Tobin's favorite stud dog, and a lot of people wanted to use him, so they sent their bitches to Tobin. Well, Tobin bred their ***** to the stud dog HE thought would compliment her (or whatever reason he had) but he filled out the stud report in Wycliff's name. He did that kind of thing a lot. It finally caught up with him and he was banned from the AKC and it ended his career as a Mastiff breeder. So, people got all up in arms because no one knew the true pedigrees and they say whole generations are blanks.
Anyway, I say, it was all so long ago, both Tobin's poor record keeping and other breeds introduced into the Mastiff's genepool, surely it's not that big of a deal anymore.

I only counted all-breed encyclopedias (not including AKC dog books) and mastiff encyclopedias!

Awwwww! I love her little dress!

I was not meaning for it to be that big, I just copied and pasted so I wouldn't misspell the name, but I was sure when I saw it, just had to get the first part of the name, I couldn't remember Alpine for the life of me.

Yes, I am busier than the proverbial one-legged man, but I have to come and check e-mails from customers every little while. Smarty!
