Why stop at just 10? Lol! But on a more serious note, what store are you getting them from? Before you pick your chicks out, stand and watch their behavior for a few minutes. If any seem listless, clumsy, or just in general appear sick, don't pick them. And pick them up carefully and look at their little butts. If they have a lot of poop on their vents, they have pasty butt. It's not a reason NOT to choose the chick, cause even perfectly healthy ones can get pasty butt, but you would need to take care of it right away once you got them home. Bantams for some reason, for some people, are more fragile than standard sized chicks. Hatching out my own bantams, I have no problem, but buying them from a feed store, I lose more than I keep. Most likely due to the poor shipping conditions. Do you have a specific bantam breed in mind? When I picked out mine last year at TSC I initially took their last 3, 2 died and they let me replace them for free cause they looked iffy when I bought them, and when I came back to get my free birds I made the mistake of bringing my kids with.

Don't ever do that if you want to leave with a modest number of chicks, lol. I ended up replacing the two dead chicks, but then they had sooooo many cute bantams in the tub, and my kids wanted more than just the two replacement chicks, and plus they had ducks, and well, to make a long story short, I came home with 4 additional chicks and 2 ducks.

I lost 2 of the new ones right off the bat, and then a few more. Of all the bantams I got there I successfully raised 4 to adulthood. A very homely black Silkie mix hen, a Mille Fleur d'Uccle hen, a Golden Laced OEGB roo, and a Golden Sebright roo. Here is a picture of my homely Silkie mixed girl Fanny. As a chick she was just solid black. She had the 5 toes, but no vaulted skull, and it wasn't until her feathers started to come in Silkied that we had an idea of what she was. It is assumed, that because TSC got their chicks from Mt. Healthy that Fanny is a Black Silkie/OEGB cross. She is the most docile bird ever, but if any roo tries to mount her, and she isn't in the mood, she will chase that boy off faster than another roo ever could! Lol. She has been wonderful with my kids since she was a baby. Here she is. Not much to look at, but you couldn't get a sweeter girl:

And here is my little d'Uccle hen Millie. She looks bigger than she really is here cause she decided to stretch her neck, lol. But she is actually my tiniest bird. She is another one that is so docile and sweet. Perfect breed to keep in a flock. I'd like to get more of her breed later on down the road because they are so sweet.

Let us all know what breeds you do pick at the store, and put up lots of pictures so we can bask in the cuteness! I swear there is very little in this world that is cuter than a newly hatched chick!
