Guessing age?

Okay - she is about the same size as my other girls but just more developed comb and wattles. My original girls are just over 12 weeks. Thanks for your input!

That was a seriously cool looking egg. it was purple for sure. Its like a 9 on the Maran scale. My friend I got the chicken from said his hens lay 5-7. We have about 8 more weeks or so before we find out what this one will lay. I have 17 so I hope one starts and the rest catch on around week 18-20. :p:fl

Very exciting. Please share pics when they start!

There is variability in both the size of combs/wattles and the age they begin to develop. You could have one pullet that's a little older or the same age and a bit more mature or simply going to have larger headgear. I don't think there is any way of being certain which it is but it isn't looking like a cockerel. A cockerel would almost certainly be showing his wing patches even if he didn't have the rest of the signs yet.

As for the lack of copper, some pullets DON'T get it. It's called "over melanized" or something similar and I happen to have one like that. She was a breeder cull. It doesn't make her another breed, just not show quality.

Thank you so much for your input. Do you know what age they would get their copper if they are going to have it at all? Probably by now huh? Of my original 15, I had one or two that were just a step ahead as far as development goes. Larger/pinker headgear (I LOVE that term). A little more curious but definitely not cockerels. It makes sense now that one would be more developed. It helps with telling them apart!! :p
