Guinea Sounds

You're quite welcome ... I'm on my first flock of guineas, and have learned a *lot* from the good folks on this forum (really appreciate all the willingness to share what they know w/ others, too ~'-)

Raising my own, and w/ my chickens, has helped 'em become more friendly for now, but they're not adults yet ... hopefully, I can come up w/ a way to continue handling them enough to make 'em easier to manage.
My pearl is very friendly & social with immediate family., Quasey and loppy were our first and both hens. I was given the girls at 4 weeks old. Loppy limped badly, and her feet were both curved to the right if you were in front of her. I thought she wasn't turned enough as an egg? that's how her feet were shaped. She was a runt, barely a pound. We lost loppy a few weeks ago, i found her in a nest box one morning.

As if she just went to sleep, my poor little girl. Quasey cried for several days looking for her. it was so sad. I have 2 cocks and a hen (whites) i was given and they are just hateful. fight amongst themselves constantly. They won't approach Quasey since my red laced black wyandotte rooster thinks Quasey is his love of his life. I hope to keep any eggs from Quasey and the white hen, maybe the chicks will be more social if i raise them. Quasey will always be here, she is a sweetheart. She perches on my shoulder when i sit down to watch chicken TV

She loves people (family members only) I miss my little loppy very much. she would peck my foot till i scooped her up in my lap. The whites are going to be the meatie guardians, or stew,.. they are just hateful birds and i can't seem to get them any friendlier. I have never seen any fowl this hateful, even geese. Ugh anyone need a few white guineas i have 3 i despise.

You 'might' be able to change their behaviors somewhat, but look to how your birds respond to strangers, and remember that this is what you are to those you were given. Losing something we love tends to cloud our view ... no matter what? These birds still ain't Loppy, and I'm sorry for your loss.

If they are good looking birds? I'd consider using them for breeding. If they're not? I would, indeed, eat them. With most all living creatures, their personalities are products of their genetics, their environment and their experiences ... you can manage all three, if you wish, to produce the best birds.

I make it, too, but only on Thanksgiving - otherwise I'd eat it all the time. Gotta exercise some restraint sometimes, right? Nah.......:).

Thank you, you're right, good point. The lady that gave them to me was afraid of them, i am sure they sensed it. They are very attractive for a guinea, and the spots are "ghosted", quite noticeable in the sun. 3 of the cocks went to the former owner of my Alpacas. I do intend to try breeding them, i think if they are separated there's a good chance it will work out OK.Here's the group when we first got them.

Quasey and Loppy at about 8 weeks.

Hopefully, one of the others in here will see these birds, 'n let ya know of conformation to any standards that may, or may not, exist (I've really no clue, except that PeepsCA and JLeigh sure seem to know their birds, and that they're might purtyful ... well ... as guineas go, of course ~'-)

Cowcreek - thank you so much for elevating me to the same status as PeepsCA, but it's undeserved. I know a little bit about some things, but everything I learned, I learned from Peeps. I read a lot, and try to apply what I learn, but I usually run all things by Peeps. What a nice compliment though! Made my day!

Well, I've gotta learn about just a few more things, then I'll absolutely know everything ~'-)

Being forever a student, and a teacher when we can, helps to improve our own capabilities ... clearly, that's workin' for you, too. And, indeed, she's taken it to a whole new level when it comes to guineas.
