Guineas vs. neighbors...what would you do?

I actually pick up "found" dogs that keep bothering my animals. I drive them to a pound 55 miles North of here and leave them. They are "found" strays. I never tell the pound who they belong to because they are simply "strays". I have probably taken 15 of them over the last 25plus years.
Only one stray dog ever made it back to this area, and I'm sure it cost a pretty penny to get him back.
Taking strays to the shelter is the right thing to do. It keeps them safe from traffic and from starving while they are lost from their homes.

As far as the guineas.... I would buy more of them. I am not into keeping the nasty neighbors happy just to keep the nasty neighbors happy. If you really want to be neighborly, get some HUGE geese to go with them. They can make quite a call too. A dozen guineas and six or more geese should really help you know when one of those poor stray animals needs a trip to the humane society to keep him safe from traffic.

My suggestion -- get MORE guineas.

If those dogs came on my property and killed my chickens and chased my cattle, they would not leave my property.

You are being way nicer than I would be. I cannot believe the way people think these days. Is there not a leash law in the city?

I had the same problem. Dogs killing my chickens. I called the sheriff. Dogs running at large attacking livestock, chickens.
You file a complaint and the Sheriff gives a warning. Next. Everytime you find the dogs on your property call in a compliant. The owner will be fined every time a complaint is recieved. In Idaho it is a $55.00 fine take that x's 30days.($1650) and this is if the dogs are on your property once a day.
The Sheriff also said I have the right to protect my chicken with any means I deem nessasary. Yes I could shoot them.

But my neighbors complied after the first fine and was really sorry what the dogs did. He keeps them penned up now.

Just thought you would like to know.

we had a problem similar but got through it with our guinea fowl standing by our sides.

oh and a person i know has cat traps and whenever he catches one he keeps it for 24 hours then lets it go with a sign on it's neck saying BANG,
and he never sees them again

Even if they don't come out just for dogs wandering around many states and counties have laws involving livestock or property damages. If the dogs are a threat to your property or family they will come get it. At minimum though like others said you should be able to haul a dog in yourself. That's what I'd do. I'd give one warning and any dog on my property after that I would haul in to a shelter or to animal control depending what organizations exist and under what rules in your area. If anyone complained I'd just tell them at least I didn't shoot it. Then probably hand them a print out of local laws showing it's entirely legal for me to shoot any animal around my livestock.

Also most places it's easy to get damages for killed livestock so long as you see the dog with your birds. After your neighbors paid $20 per bird (easy to justify if they are adult layers and more if they are an uncommon breed) they might rethink letting their dogs roam.

Id get Peacocks like maybe 10-20 of them, and maybe a dozen more guineas? Maybe he'll learn to keep his dog up.

I'm not sure if you mentioned it in your post, if so I apologize, but how old are your guineas?

My guineas started out very loud, but they got "wise" with age. They are absolutely silent all of the time, unless they see something I should know about - then the ruckus begins.

One time I heard them screaming on the other side of the barn. I walked around the barn and as soon as they saw me they went silent and walked away to continue eating. I looked around and not more than 3 feet from them was a feral cat. They screamed until they knew that I saw the threat, then they went back to work. They didn't even run from the cat.

If they are still young, they may quiet down and only scream at real threats.

Someone mentioned about using something smelly to hit the dogs with to make them stink. I would make some water balloons filled with Doe Estrus. Just launch them at the dogs when they come in your yard. The neighbors will enjoy getting that smell off the furniture.

when i was a kid my dog killed one of our chickens. dad took the dead bird and hooked it up to a fence charger and waited for the dog to come back to play with it...as soon as the dog bit in, he plugged in the charger! dog didn't kill any more chickens after that!!!

you might wanna try this to persuade your neighbors dogs to leave your birds alone....AND GET MORE GUINEAS!
