Gun Owners and Non-Gun Owners should come to a Meeting of the Minds

One of the reasons we LEFT California was it's growing, ever increasing erosion of the right to bear arms. Hello, Tennessee. Nine acres in a private little hollow is also very nice.

Police are there to be witnesses to what happened to you and to try - most crimes are unsolved, to find the "bad guys."

Just this week, not far from me a senior gentleman was awakened by a knock at his door at 5:20 AM, three young men with a gun then started to break in. Two of the three fled with extra lead, a third got away clean.

The elderly gentleman in his own home, with his licensed gun, was uninjured.

When OUR local sheriffs come out to warn me of a burglar in the area they ASK me if I have a shotgun or pistol - to USE in case. My answer is yes.

He was not "looking to shoot everything or anything" neither am I except targets, varmints and anyone intending harm on my property.

And that is probably the first time the word "CHICKEN" has been mentioned in the entire thread, which would certainly seem to add fuel to greathorse's point.

I don't get the beef you have. When people get together to discuss horse trailers, don't they eventually discuss the horse. We're on a CHICKEN WEBSITE, for crying out loud, and you read how many pages to determine that people started out talking gun control and eventually turned to talking about their guns. WHY??? I don't get that, but I get why people are talking about their guns. What I don't get is why they aren't talking about their holsters, reloading equipment, and shooting ranges. Oh, wait, we're talking horse trailers...

BTW, I only actually have known two "gun enthusiasts". Neither one would do as you described. But they're not speaking anonymously on a CHICKEN WEBSITE.

I dont really have a beef at all about the conversation on this site. I was simply weighing in on my observation that many folks that I know that are gun owners have some kind of need to let us know all about the guns they have etc etc etc.

I really dont share stories about my horses or my chickens unless folks are interested and I find many of the gun toters to be a bit obsessive.

Exactly. You get my point perfectly. A reasonable restriction on a right does not deny that right. I can still hold my rally, just not outside your window at 2 AM.

I also can't slander, libel, use copyrighted material without permission outside of fair use, or blab military secrets.

Interesting distinction. So are you saying there aren't laws in your community that would prevent me from practicing my free speech rights in this case?

Yes there are local laws to keep your bull horn from my window. its called Trespassing and Disturbing the Peace. which are crimes against others or the public. how does the simple ownership of a firearm equal a crime against anyone?

It is only a crime because there is a restriction on the activity. Which amounts to what most would consider a reasonable restriction on the most basic of constitutional rights.

If a particular restriction is placed on the ownership of a particular gun, and I violate that restriction, I am committing a crime.

BTW, for the sake of this illustration, lets just say my bullhorn rally of kool-aide drinkers is taking place on the street or public sidewalk.

This has been a very interesting discussion (and incredibly respectful considering the emotional topic). One of the things that has impressed me is the enormity of our country (people have contributed from all over) and how different people's environments are. I think this contributes to one's feelings about owning guns. I never thought twice about the rifle over the kitchen door - it was only used to shoot porcupine or a coyote after the sheep. It was brought to my attention only when a visitor cringed at it's sight. AK 47's to me are a different matter. That's overkill.

Last week, screaming wildly and waving a big rake, I ran after a fox who was carrying my black sex-link in his mouth.

He only got off with a mouthful of feathers, but I am thinking I need something that has a longer range than a rake. My main predators are fox, fisher, and raccoon. What would you suggest? I am not a sharp shooter - is there something that I could use that would hit a fox? I am pretty good with a rake, but still.

Actually you can, but you are just held accountable in civil or criminal court. Nobody loses their tongue or a piece of it due to the first amendment, you have a right to use your voice and you also have the obligation to use it wisely or be held accountable. This is the way it should be with firearms, criminals could care less about laws written for honest people. In fact they love them, the majority of criminals and prison populations SUPPORT reasonable restrictions(anti-gun laws).

Right. Just as you can still own a restricted gun. You will just pay a fine or do a little jail time for the violation.

[And here I thought we were done, you and I.]
