Gun suggestions for predators-really

For a pistol I recommend a Walther PPK .380. I also have wide hands with short fingers and the ppk fits my hand like it was custom made for me. Its small enough to carry comfortably but has enough power to get the job done. I also use a ruger .357. I shoot.38 with it. Its small enough to fit my hand has the right balance and is lovely to shoot whethor Im target practicing with wadcutters.38's or .357"s. I know you will get lots of rifle advice but thought I would add my 2 cents on the pistols because I know how hard it can be to find a nice pistol that feels good and balanced in your hands. It took me awhile to find a handgun I was really comfortable with

If you want to be able to kill the predators at any distance effectively you need atleast a .204 or .223 both are very effective with no recoil. Shells are cheaper for the .223 though.
Most people cannot shoot a pistol acurrately at distances beyond 30 to 40 yards and cannot hit a moving target either.
The .22 as a hand gun for snakes is perfect but too light to quickly and humanely take down most predators that are not close. I mean inside 50 yards.

If you want something light but packs a wallop in a pistol, go with a .380. It is basically a 9mm but with less powder. For a rifle you cannot beat a .17. The .17 was MADE for predators. It shoots flatter and futher than a .22 and also the bullet made for it expands on impact for greater damage. I am a woman who LOVES guns, the bigger the better and I own MANY, but these two are great for people starting out or for just plinking around. Go to a pawn shop or gun shop and check these suggestions out. Most people at those places are good to help you out. I will also tell you this: Go pick your gun then tell them that you want the cash price. They will always knock off some money, sales tax and usually throw in a box of ammo. At least they do for me. Times are tough and there are lots of gun dealers.

I laughed too only because that is all I will shoot anything with. A BB or Pellet gun will chase off something quick. I will shoot at neighbors dogs if they go near my coop. I just yell at them if they're in the yard. We don'thave many dogs that get loose around here. There are only 2 houses that leave their dogs loose and ours is one. ONly becaue they don't bother anybody. Don't tear up stuff or steal or kill their animals.

My grandson was attatched my our mean rooster 1 time too many. It took a pellet to the head and that was all it took. So it will kill smaller predators.

The 22lr will work great but you may have to go up and do a finishing shot or two. The shotgun is not really good unless you want to hit a chicken or two. The shot spreads over distance. The best of what you own might be the 410 w/ slugs. Good to a hundred yrds. great stopping power

I use a Remington .17 Semi auto for all preds. Dead on at 100 yards I use a 8-24 power scope with a spot light. Same recoil as a .22 and about the same in noise. I also will drive around on my Polaris Ranger with a .410 for the movers. My best kill with it was when I heard a lot of commtion out at the coop at 12am. I went out side with the .17, turned on my spot light (mounted on the gun) and scanned the area, found a set of beedy eyes and the sillouete of a fox. 75 yards 1 shot between the eyes.

I find a scoped .22 with hollow point rounds does the trick for preds of raccoon size and smaller. For a fox and up, I'd use something larger in caliber.
