guniea pigs

A person just posted on another thread that their piggy had 7 babys! Thats a lot! They don't usually survive when there is that many. Of the three varietys I think my favorite is the absyninan. Their swirls are so cute!

Be very very sure they're all female as they can have 1-8 pups at a go and those pups are born four on the floor, claws and teeth and it's very hard on mom.

Keep an eye on them... even if they are all girls doesn't mean they weren't bred before you got them.

Some links to good sites are in my braingle wiki page

And congrats on your new cuties. I LOVE watching them popcorn, it's the cutest thing ever!!

~*Sweet Cheeks*~ :

can you put a piggy in with a bunny?

It's not recommended. Their dietary needs are different and rabbits are much larger and could unintentionally injure the piggy. They can certainly be playmates for floortime as long as they are supervised but I would cage them separately.

ETA LOL, I didn't even read the post above mine before I answered this!

Thank you for the replies. After seeing the post about the guinea that had 7 - holy cow - I thought they look so cute, maybe one would be a good companion for my single and very small holland lop house bunny that is in a 4 level ferret nation cage. I could close off in the middle and only let them play together when supervising.

Do guinea choose one area to potty in like bunnies and hamsters or do they go all over?

How are the dietary needs different? I feed the bun high quality Ringmaster/Showmaster pellets, timothy or orchard hay free choice (depending on what I have on hand for the goats), fresh greens (arugula/green or red leaf lettuce/bok choy), baby carrots, apples of the tree.

Thank you for your input. I'm thinking of getting one based on your obvious love of the little furry cuties.

I had my bunny and piggy in a cage together.. they were best buds..

I just supplemented the piggy with vit c things. But they both ate the same pellets and hay...

I think guniea pigs and bunnies need their own pens. Bunnies are bigger than guniea pigs and they can hrut them even if they dont mean to. Get a guniea pig for your guniea pig b/c they need to have a real friend (the more the better) just make sure that they are all female or you will end up with lots of lil piggies, I dont think bunnies really need another bunny to be happy, mine is really happy just by himself

One or the other of them needs higher protein, I think it's the guinea pigs?? I believe rabbits need like 16% and GP need 20%. I'm not sure, it could be flip-flopped.

What is the beest cage to buy I have a c&c cage already but it's to big for the room I have her in I need something smaller n has a top on it to keep my lil boy from climbing in the cage wit her
