Gunieas laying eggs...

I still haven't found a nest but I think 2 are setting wish I could find her and add some of my rir eggs. marrie

I walked the tree line around our yard when my hen went missing. She was hard to find and blended well with her surroundings. She was next to a down tree just out of the grass into the trees. Walk slowly and look under & behind everything.

One sure give away is to watch the roo. He will stick close to her and when you go near him he will 'lead you away'. Where he goes back to...search that area slowly & closely, you should find her. She will not leave the nest, just will squat closer to the ground. The roo will go back to roost at night but will go back to the hen in the am and stay close to her.

If you have alot of predators in your area, you might try putting some protection around her, if you can. I tried and it was fruitless. I was able to stick some other guinea eggs close to her and she pulled them under her. Oh yea....watch out for her beak...they are mean when setting.

I have a pair which don't free range and cohabit with the chickens. They lay in the same box (started last week).

The eggs are a lot more pointy than chicken eggs. Very easy to spot.

That is my situation as well, they do not free range, they are with my chickens. I want to hatch some eggs, so maybe they'll take to laying in the nests. I am also going to try and put some branches and maybe prop a piece of wood over one of the nest boxes for some privacy!

My guineas are barely over 7 months old and some of them are laying already. I have no idea which ones but they've dug a nest in the dirt floor of the coop and I find 4 or 5 eggs a day. I have several females and a few males. I'm collecting the eggs to incubate them. No idea if they're fertile or not, haven't seen anyone "doing the deed".

I dont mean to hijack this thread but at the same time seemed almost silly to start one anew as my questions are very similar.

I have two cocks that are cooped with my production flock. They can get in and out pretty much at will except at night.

I have a freind that has a single hen tat I think I can get from him, (yes I will quaruntine) Sp?? I am thinking I will put one of the cocks and this hen in one of my breeder pens, there is a dark community laying box in there.

Is it very likely that they will mate up? Is it very likely that she will lay in that environment? I have an incubator and no problem hatching if I can get some fertile eggs from her.

How does this sound for a strategy?

Feel free to move if this is a hijack.

I got eggs from a guy that has his guineas in a enclosed pen, and he said his lay in the nest boxes.

I have had a few of mine lay in the coop, but if they can get out, they prefer to hide them in the woods.

I would think they should be fertile, I dont remember ever seeing the guineas "doin the deed", but I did have a good fertility rate, so they must have done it at some point.

These Guinea's have laid 14 eggs in my yard... we took 12 to the neighbors bator, left 1 in the nest and cracked 1 to see if they are fertile. Looked fertile to me. I have a question... aren't they suppose to sit on their nest alot... cause these dont they just come in the yard and lay an egg then leave and they dont come back at night to sit on the nest or anything

.

They lay an egg and leave, come back the next day and lay another. Some hens will share a nest. When they are ready and the nest gets about 20-30 eggs, they will set on the nest and will not leave it! Which is why so many get killed while setting.
