Guppy tanks

I just want all of you to know that you have ruined me on fish. I must have guppies from aquabid!

Would a normal tank setup do? A 10 gallon with gravel, fake or live plants?

It won't be for probably 6 months, but still awesome!

10 gal is fine, i recomend LOTS and LOTS of fake or live plants, i perferabley would want live, just so if they get hungry they can nibble a bit, and because i think fake things just make the tank look too artificial, with all the ornaments i like just small rocks big rocks medium rocks with moss on them with live plants everywhere, today im getting a 10 gal and im going to plant it with live and do the low tech tank MAYBE, have fun with your guppies! I just got mine at the LFS that arent feeders and the female is half black and the male gold snakskin, i dont know what the babies are going to look like because 1 the female could have been pre hit and 2 i know nothing about guppy genetics!

Tank is done for right now, just need to get some plants and finish cycling the tank! I got some feeder fish and they are all sick. Not from the water or anything, but just from being..well, feeders. Once the tank is cycled and if there are any survivors from all their illnesses, they have a permenant residence! Now i just need to get another tank for the females, so i dont have babies popping out all the time..

Longhorns&Chickens :

I have a 30 gallon tank full of guppies! I wouldn't call myself a breeder, mine do that all on their own! I just have a heater and a filter, nothing fancy, and they do fine. I have way too many guppies and I'm always giving them away. I have an algea eater and a pleakastomas (sp?), a Betta and 2 tetras in with the guppies, they help me a little with population control. I think guppies are some of the easiest fish to care for, they don't require anything fancy, just water

. If you want the babies to do well, mine seem to like the live plants, and I would recommend lots of plants for easy hiding. Have fun with your fish!

I'm sure I'll get some heat for this, but why don't you feed some of the guppy fry to your Bettas and tetras? That would help keep some of the population down.

Have you tried adding some aquarium salt to the water for the guppies or platys? They don't have to have it but live-bearers generally fair better if their water is a bit brackish.

I'm on a fish forum similar to this one, and I seem to remember reading that fish can 'store' sperm. So if she is pre-hit (and I'm right) she could have babies a few times before she's 'clean'.

You do realize that you cannot keep bettas together? Even if they are different sexes? Once the female lays her eggs and both fish put them in the nest, you need to remove the female from the tank. The male will take care of the eggs and fry, but you have to remove him within a day or two of the eggs hatching. Breeding Bettas is not an easy task by any means.
