Gurgling, coughing, crop full of fluid, not pooping, tail awry.

Thanks Oolala, for your kind words.

Yeah, nothing is working. Considering her age, I’m assuming it’s her time. I just brought some fresh salad greens chopped up for her and drizzled them with apple cider vinegar (“with the “mother”) and she’s scarfing it up, so at this point she’s still got some life left. She’s watching her flock mates from a window upstairs overlooking the yard. She stands all day. I took her outside briefly to see how she’d react and she was, as expected, somewhat slow to move but she was trying her best to graze, eating some grass. I brought her back in after 5 minutes, it’s chilly outside and misting and I didn’t want to stress her.

Tonight is the 5th night of Tylan (50) injections...so not sure what to do tomorrow if she’s still with us. According to what I read, treatment is only 5 days (injection) and not to continue after that. As I said her gurgling sounds better, less coughing. The crop is not as full of liquid. Sadly, I think I wasn’t giving the right dosage of Tylan 50 this whole time. (1cc) Dosage for standard size chickens I read are anywhere from 1/2 to 1 cc of Tylan 50 once a day. She’s a Jersey Giant and I didn’t realize she might need more than that. Can I try another anti-biotic? Could I continue injections of Tylan (50) past the 5 day mark?

Plumbs Veterinary Drug Handbook says that Tylan dosage can be 5-20 mg per pound of weight given 3-4 times day. Many use Tylan 50 orally, and I would use 0.25 ml or 1/4 ml per pound 3 times daily for up to 5 days. Tylan 50 is 50 mg per ml. Tylan 50and 200 have been removed from the market. Tylosin oral powder can presently be found online for pigeons. It is mixed in the drinking water.

Thank you for that information. The problem with giving her an oral dose is that she’s nto letting me get near her beak nor is she eating/drinking enough to put it in her water. I’d prefer not to give her shots but it has been the only way I can get the medicine in her.

I’m surprised that atyan 50 and 200 were taken off the market? Both are on the Tractor Supply webpage store currently. Perhaps it’s another country or state? I know I can no longer purchase the form of powdered water soluble anti-biopics I used to use. Why are they doing this to people?

I’m not sure what “mg” translates to.. it’s not cc’s, right? I’ll have to do a search on that....EDIT, I see 1000 mg is equivalent to 1 cc.

Thanks again.

Hi @Bocktobery 10 . I’m so sorry about your girl. I might try a stimulant-free laxative (small gel capsule, I believe) or a molasses flush. Maybe drizzle molasses over greens if she’s still eating them?

Also, fluids can be given subcutaneously, but I believe everything (fluid, needle, etc.) needs to be sterile and you need excellent aseptic technique. Honestly, I don’t know how one would obtain sterile saline.

Thanks micstrachan. I’ll have to look up the molasses flush.
I did give a sick kitten fluids once in this way. I was thinking about this yesterday, but of course I’d have to get all the stuff from my vet. Would it be worth it? I’d do it if I could know it might give her a chance. 😕. It’s so difficult to know.
