Gutsy owl

I have barred owls, sometimes up to 4 seperate ones, in the yard every evening, but they have never bothered my free ranging chickens----even the 8 week old ones. However, a barred owl, even though very large, is not a Great Horned owl. We supposedly have those, too, but I've never seen one either in the wild or the back yard. The barred owls come here to eat----I know you won't want to believe this----lightning bugs.

Barred Owls are not an issue for me either. Chickens are wary of them but only losses I attribute to Barred Owl where rather small juveniles. Barred Owls do not visit here when the Great-horned Owls are coming in. When both species visiting, Barred on come in moonless nights.
