According to an Associated Press news release:

.....The Corn Refiners Association wants to use "corn sugar" as an alternative name for the widely used liquid sweetener currently labeled as high fructose corn syrup on most sodas and packaged foods. They're attempting an image makeover after some scientists linked the product to obesity, diabetes and other health problems; some food companies now tout products that don't contain the ingredient......

and Seven U.S. senators, all from America's corn-growing heartland, filed a letter with the FDA urging them to adopt the "corn syrup" name to help clear up consumer confusion.

I swear big industry must consider the average american consumer to be a bunch of blitering idiots.

You never see the producers of cane and beet sugar applying to call sugar something else in an attempt to fool the public.

As a farmer and corn grower I've never understood why people are so opposed to using the sugar from corn as opposed to sugar from sugar beets or sugar cane.....or for that matter using honey or agave as a sweetner.

I'm not a chemist so I don't know how the molecular structures compare, but it would seem to me that sugar is sugar and too much of any of it no matter the source isn't good for a person.

Personally I see it as another way to bash the American farmer.....because that's who you hurt....not the middle men who make the money.

katy: here's a link to a boring video but it does explain (biochemically) how there is a difference between different sugars: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM

it's
fructose specifically (in absence of the fiber that would come with eating a whole fruit/vege) that is worse than sucrose (table sugar) or glucose. high fructose corn syrup is, well, high in fructose.

they're ALL bad when eaten in excess, just like anything else. but part of the problem here is that they're putting HFCS into -everything- now, so it's getting more and more difficult to eat it in moderation.

ETA: also, this is why the name change is a little nefarious. calling it "corn sugar" implies that it IS the same as regular table sugar, giving credence to the "sugar is sugar" idea, when it's not actually that simple. however, i personally think it's mainly a marketing thing, because most regular people don't know the biochemical difference between a glucose/sucrose/fructose. i think they just want it to sound less "chemically" so that it sounds more natural, as is the current trend.

I don't think it's so much corn sugar vs beet/cane sugar as it is sugar in general. Personally, I try to moderate any sugar I eat, along with sodium, carbs, fat...I should be stick-thin!

Thanks for the link....I'll watch it when I have some time.

I just get tired of fat people blaming the food for getting fat when in reality most times ( in the absence of a medical issue) it's their own over-eating and lack of activity that is making them fat.....not the food itself.
