Please don't send hate mail after you read this. I know, I know! This morning our first 2 eggs appeared in the coop. So while we were feeding and letting the flock have the run of our backyard, In my excited state, I lit up a cigarette. After I walked through our garden I returned to the run, cig in hand. My kids were rearranging a feeder so we could add oyster/egg shell supplements. Usually at this time I would be handing out some treats like mealworms or cherry tomatoes so the girls are acting clingy. Minding my own business, Mrs. Walter, Black Copper Maran (our first and newest layer) grabs the cig from my fingertips and runs off. Before I could stop her and trying to avoid a hay fire in the run she drops it and before I could pick it up, Buffy, the Worm Slayer (BO) poops on it... This happened so fast and the 3 of us were laughing so hard. This was so funny and amazing I couldn't make this up. Was she letting me know that she didn't allow smoking around the eggs and this was a conspiracy to get me to quit or was she just acting out in habit looking for treats.
Moral of this story; 1. Don't smoke around the flock. or 2. Don't upset a mother hen. or 3. Don't turn your back on women? LOL
