Had a visitor over with a dog, stupid move.

We recently moved and my dear Hubby invited his sister over to show here the place. We are not close because of other issues but I seem to be more understanding with her then my husband is. She asked to bring her dog and we said as long as you watch her, well after having issues with her allowing her children to be monsters thru the last 10 years do to her just letting them run wild and not watching nor disciplining them in the past I should have known better but I tend to give people the benefit of the dought. She totally spaced out and her dog came running out with one of my chickens, nearly dead and she did nothing, I had to discipline her dog and I have tried to just say it is my fault because I should have known better, I just can except that. I think it is time to just write her off. I just had to vent. I have 3 dogs who are trained to be around chickens and now the one is showing too much interest in them because of this event. uuugghhh. I know that with dogs you always have to reinforce the rules but I am just upset because one stupid event is effecting every thing. Thanks for letting me vent I figured someone here would understand and I just wanted to get it out so I don't dwell or hold a grudge. I will NEVER make this mistake again. Even worse I told her she had to put my training collar on the dog and I think shock collars come with GREAT responsibility and used properly only need to be use a few times to be very effective. She just beeped and shocked this poor dog and still did not follow up with a discipline session after the correction with the collar. I even told her that she desperately needs to learn how to train the dog because I would take it from her train it and keep it.
I just cant wrap my head around how she could be this way.
I do feel better getting this out.

I would be sure NEVER to let her bring said dog around again. It's not your responsibility to train the dog. It's not her fault that the dog is like that either, it's natural instinct. She should have leapt into action, and for not - that is unacceptable!

That is exactly how I feel, thank you for saying it so well.I think My Husband was shocked how well I handled it. But as said earlier I will never do this again. Dogs have natural instincs and need to be watched and trained I was mad at her not the dog.

You have every right to be angry. If you weren't, I'd be concerned.

Chickenduck, I feel for ya. When you put the time and energy into teaching your pets to behave a certain way it just drives you nuts to have it disrupted. I have a roommate who has managed to ruin my dogs. Before she arrived, they were well mannered 'fur kids' who were welcomed visiting friends or family. Now, I have to lock them up if I know someone is coming over. Or if they arrive un-expected I have to either go out and escort the person across the yard, or drag the dogs inside and put them in a bedroom. They beg, fight over food, jump on people, race out any open door - and when possible in open doors too. They can no longer be allowed out of the fenced in yard without a leash because recall no longer exists. It's maddening to say the least.
Thankfully, your sister in law was only visiting (right?) so you can just make it clear that her dog is no longer welcome in your yard.
Did you say that the dog nearly killed one of your chickens??? How is the bird now? Did she recover?

Also, I'm sure War Chicken was kidding. I LIVE by spell check because I can't spell worth a hoot. What gets me is when you spell it right so spellcheck misses it, but it's the wrong word.

No but it did not seem to suffer long, just took afew breaths and passed. I am no expert but I think lungs were punctured. Not to mention ALL the kids saw it.
