Had Cat in Coop, warning shot gone wrong, HELP!

Cluckin'Along :

There was a witness to the warning shot, our great neighbor who watches over our chickens had sounded the initial alarm! And as far as killing them with kindness...... We used to send cookies every year for Christmas, 2 years ago when delivering, I got a response of OH, and the door shut on me. (they did take the cookies though) They recently had their property re-surveyed also, they made sure to pull up the Original boundary markers placed by the developers 20+ years ago before their surveyor came, funny, we "lost" 5+ feet of yard to that one..... They also came over while I had friends/contractors putting in an entry way and asked them to quote for a wall and how close to the property line could it go? They aren't the friendliest bunch. I wish I had eggs to give! I'm lucky If I get 2 a day right now as my 4 younger hens haven't produced yet. I'd love to be friendly, but honestly, I'm scared!!

Thank You All again!

Umm ok forget the basket, how rude after you made them cookies...

Our town only has a sheriff, and 2 Troopers assigned at all time....... Small town. Mom said she was sure she had missed since the cat simply scooted after the shot. She said "no yowls, yelps or anything, just scooted." ?? I'm wondering If it bothered someone Else's chickens on the same day? I wish I knew. Also, Mom fired the warning early afternoon, cat wasn't found with injury till after 7pm..... And I know Mom would have been right over there apologizing If she had know it was their cat. she only found out when they came storming over accusing her of being trigger happy. She decide the best thing to do then was to walk away, as to not say anything bad..... I just don't know.

Thank you though.

Don't you have leash laws in RI? Looks like a case of not following the law by the cat owners to me!!! What would they be doing if the cat "wandered" into the wrong back yard and was attacked by a dog (who was on his own property, obeying the leash law)? Or was hit by a car? Got attacked by a raccoon in the woods? I am a previous cat owner, loved my Sissy very much, but she NEVER went outside. If your neighbors allow their cat to "roam" then they should accept whatever happens to it as a result. I know that sounds a bit harsh, but, they are as much in the wrong as your Mom. I agree with some of the others, would try to kill the neighbors with kindness, BUT, stand your ground about their cat being where it shouldn't have been if the need arises.

Sorry this happened to you, but, IMHO, I don't think you're at fault in any way here.

Hope things get better....

Right now I think the best thing to do is not make any statements until this is resolved, and that includes on here.

That aside I personally believe we all have a right to protect our property by appropriate means.

I agree with the above Texan, take no survivors. Teach mom how to shoot, and get a pellet gun, just as quiet, thrice as deadly. they even come with scopes! and,,,,,,,,ssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!

We had something similar happen, but not over chickens. Neighbors down the road had a nasty little cat. The day we moved into our house, the cat got in our garage and wouldn't leave. Would hiss and growl and try to get into the house. Roamed the neighborhood killing anything it could get it paws on.

Well, I guess someone had had enough and shot it with a .22. The cat had been shot twice, they found the one bullet, the other had gone clean through. The family had a fit... police, news stations, reporters, etc. Went on for days... them trying to find out who shot their precious little kitty. You would have though the cat was a saint.

I had had enough after about a week or so of this and wrote a letter to the news station regarding the actual personality of the cat... and the fact that someone had shot a gun, a real gun, in a small neighborhood with children everywhere. One little fact had not been addressed was that the bullet could have gone through anyone's wall and hurt someone. That just ticked the family off more, but all of a sudden there were no more reporters. No more police asking about the cat.

Don't get me wrong, I love animals. I even like cats. But if they are pets and you love them, and you live in a populated area, keep them in the house. Keep them safe. I don't have a cat for a reason... I don't want one. I also don't want your cat leaving dead birds and rabbits in my yard. I don't your cat peeing on my bushes and marking territory.

My only grip with the person who shot the cat is that he used a gun in my neighborhood only a hundred feet or so from my house. You hear about bullets going into houses all the time in Philly... one would think we would learn. No one knows where that 2nd bullet landed... we are just lucky it wasn't in one of us.

I have no issue with guns, my hubby is a hunter... we even have a BB pump gun for squirrels... but not when houses are less than 50 feet apart and children are playing in their backyards and riding their bikes out front. We recently replaced our siding on the house and was shocked by what our walls WERE NOT made out of. A well placed bullet could have cut through our bedroom like it was going through butter. Very scary. We have since updated the outside and now there is a little more between us and the elements.

Sorry if I have rambled...

Thank you Lurky! I wish I had attack chickens! This is the Second Cat I've had trouble with! The first left me with a foot injury, but at least one of my Roos sorta chased it off. The rest of my hens are only 17 weeks old, and they are a bit puny, and well, chicken! Everyone was just in the coop going crazy when this one arrived.

Can I train them to be attack chickens?

Hi PineBurrow,
I had called the Zoning office before I got the chickens, so I was certain I could have them. I even checked with DEM when we had a Fisher Cat Lurking, they informed us that the Fisher cat could be dispatched for harassing the chickens. I'm just not sure yet if the same rule applies to domestic cats.... I plan to give Town hall a ring today to find out how I may obtain a copy of that law. And it was only a pump action BB-gun. No powder

Are you serious ? Was there a mistake made by the original surveyor or did they just pull a land grab manouver ? We have a similar situation here at our farm but it was an honest mistake and our neighbour (who now has an additional 6' X 200 + yards of our land) has signed a waiver to the property since his fencing contractor made the mistake at his own instruction. He is a nice guy and offered A, to buy the land or B, have the fence re-located at his expense. I declined both, for one I don't want to lose the ground and for another it has no particular use in my near future but, I understand that there are Grandfather/ land adoption rules which allow unclaimed property to be forfeited to the person who takes of care of the property after X years. If you haven't already looked into this matter you better get on it toot sweet.

Here in Vt it has to be drawn up as a "quit claim deed". The guy who wants the land, pays taxes on it for x amount of time through mutual agreement, then after the time lapses, it becomes his. If I was you, I'd be looking at my deed, and hire a surveyor. Then I'd buy one of them Gamo pellet guns that pop out 1650 feet per second,,,,,,,,,,for the "next time"
