Had Cat in Coop, warning shot gone wrong, HELP!

Some one needs to call National Inquirer. You could make a lot of money of that is the truth.

OP-I can only reiterate what's already been said: Have no further contact with these neighbors! Get an attorney for both the cat issue and especially the land issue! Your neighbors are bullies. I've had a neighbor like that. Take my word for it. You need a lawyer just to make sure you can CYA.

the only thing i would do differently is step up to a higher powerd "warning" shot. and i'd "miss" right where your mom aimed! after that, denial is your best defense. ie...."what gun shot? i never heard anything?"

...anyway, maybe it wasn't a BB. maybe a chicken pecked the cats eye?

I've been thinking the same thing. I wasn't present when the trooper spoke about the injury, and did not ask enough questions i guess, but it was my mother that related the Troopers statement about the BB. If it was a chicken peck, and not a BB at all then the Story will take a VERY different turn. Does anyone know If I can request vet records for someone else's animal? Or would that be an Attorney's job?

Thank You All again!

If the case goes to court you can request anything you want but wait until the court day and if they don’t have it then ask why they didn’t bring all the evidence to court. Request to see it because it’s a crucial part of the case. I would ask that the case be dismissed for failure to provide the report. Remember the report isn’t the same as a bill.

BTW I’ve never heard of a warning shot. I was raised by the rule, one shot one kill.

Why would the OP be sued? He didn't do anything.......

You cannot be responsible for another persons actions whether it was intentional or not, unless it is a minor child.

See that is what I don't get! My rooster (king of the coop) has beat up 2 cats that I know of on his own... He's a banty, but he's a GREAT fighter when it comes to the strays around here.

You need yourself a good roo earning his keep!

We once inherited a large dog, one of those we got from a friend of a friend of a friend that no longer could keep the dog. Not long after we got him, he tried to bite my husband, and that was the last time he tried to bite anyone. My husband shot him in front of our house.

A short time later, the Sheriff's Deputy pulled up to investigate. A neighbor wrongly assumed it was her dog we had shot, and called the cops on us. He pulled up and asked if we shot the neighbor's dog, said she called to report we killed her dog, who wasn't doing anything wrong when my husband shot him. HUH???? They let him run loose all the time, how would they know what he was or wasn't doing? He had never given us any problems but they later had another dog they let run loose who DID give us problems. The second dog was a wolf hybrid, and he was shot by someone else after he kept coming on their porch and refusing to let then come and go via the front door. The guy asked them once to keep him up, then shot him and called the owner to let them know. They still contended the dog had done no wrong....

I guess my point is....

PEOPLE ARE CRAZY!!!! Stay away from them.....

Unfortunately, in many states, cats are considered "free spirits" and are not required to be contained or leashed(for obvious reasons). Your best bet is to predator proof your run, OR- next time, use the hose. I would wager the cat is going to hate water a lot more than anything else...and a severe hosing might make him a bit more wary of coming into your current run.

As far as the cat goes- he was IN your chicken run, stalking YOUR chickens, on YOUR property. You might try and suggest them putting a breakaway collar on any of their cats, which will make them more identifiable as a pet instead of a feral menace.

I also do not believe that you should have to pay any vet bills, considering he was on your property attacking your chickens. Something to consider. Good luck!

I had a cat eating my chickens, my father has trapped 5 cats and there are still more lurking about (my neighbor loves outdoor cats)
Trapping and releasing then a few miles away is the best and cheapest way.
